The Monnify Glossary


  • Contract: A personalized agreement that defines how your business operates on our platform such as your preferred payment methods, collection channels, what fees apply etc.


  • BVN (Bank Verification Number): An 11-digit unique identity number issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). We use your BVN solely to verify your identity (KYC) so you can start transacting. We cannot access your funds or your transaction history using just your BVN.


  • Cap: The maximum fee you pay for a single transaction, regardless of the transaction amount. Our fee is 1.5%, capped at ₦2,000 per transaction

Example: If a customer pays you ₦1,000,000, the 1.5% calculation would be ₦15,000. However, due to the Cap, we stop counting at ₦2,000. Now, you save ₦13,000. 


  • Chargeback: A dispute raised by a cardholder claiming a transaction was fraudulent or unauthorized.


  • IP Whitelisting: With IP Whitelisting, you create a secure perimeter around your account by restricting payout requests to a specific list of trusted IP addresses. Monnify will only honor requests from these verified sources. This way, your money is protected in case of a compromise. 


  • KYC (Know Your Customer) / KYB (Know Your Business): The mandatory process of verifying your identity as a merchant or the customer.


  • Mandate: A formal permission that a customer gives so the merchant can debit the customer’s bank account directly at set intervals without asking them.


  • Merchant: That’s you. In the Monnify ecosystem, a "Merchant" is any individual, business, or organization that uses our platform to accept payments.


  • Paycode: Short for payment code. It is a 10-digit number generated by merchants for their customers to take to a Moniepoint Agent to withdraw cash.


  • Payin (Payment Collection): Any money coming into your Monnify business account.
  • Payout: Also called disbursement or transfer. These terms are often used interchangeably to mean money moving out of your Monnify wallet.


  • Settlement: The movement of funds from your Monnify Wallet to your corporate bank account after deducting Monnify's processing fee.


  • Settlement Cycle: The timeline for when your money moves from your Monnify wallet to your corporate bank account.


  • Split Payment (Sub-accounts): With this feature, you get to automatically divide a single incoming payment between 2 or more different destinations. 


  • Tokenization: Card tokenization allows a merchant to debit a customer’s card without requiring any input from the customer for subsequent transactions.


  • Virtual Account: A dedicated account number generated for your business or your specific customers.


  • Wallet: Your digital purse that holds your balance on the Monnify dashboard. When you get paid, the money lands in your Monnify wallet and stays there until you withdraw it (settlement) to your corporate bank account or use it to pay vendors.


  • Webhooks: A mechanism Monnify uses to send real-time transaction details to merchants so they don’t have to request it every time.

  • Create Payment Links: No website? Not an issue. Generate a simple payment link in seconds. Send it via WhatsApp or Instagram DM, and get paid via card or transfer immediately.

  •  API Key Management: Distinct environments for safety reasons. Toggle between Test Mode (for safe experiments) and Live Mode (for real money) and get your API keys instantly.
  • Webhook Logs: With webhooks, Monnify automatically sends details to the merchant's app, rather than the merchants requesting it themselves as with APIs. This allows them to take additional actions such as providing value to their users or sending an email to a customer.

  3. Reserved Account: Reserve accounts for frequent customers. Generate reserved accounts that can accept payments of any amounts, and do not expire. 
  4. Plugins: Move faster with our plugins. Monnify provides ready-made plugins and libraries to extend the flexibility of your application.

  • Transaction Splitting: Skip the headache of manual reconciliation. Automate your revenue sharing. With Transaction Splitting, an incoming payment can be automatically divided between 2 or more accounts instantly. You only need to define the percentage, leave the math to us.


  • Recurring Payments: Debit a customer’s account automatically for repeat purchases without requesting an OTP every time. We offer two powerful ways to automate your collections:

a. Card Tokenization: Give your customers a frictionless experience. After the first successful transaction, you can charge their card for future payments instantly, with zero input required from them.

b. Direct Debit: Direct Debit allows you to create and activate mandates, a formal agreement that authorizes you to debit a customer’s bank account directly at set intervals

  • Bulk Transfers: Pay multiple vendors or employees in a single click with our bulk payout tool.



3. Verification Service

Protect your business from fraud by knowing exactly who your customers are. Our Know-Your-Customer (KYC) suite protects your business from impersonation and fraud in real-time.

  • Name Enquiry: Stop guessing. Instantly verify that a bank account number actually matches the name of the user claiming it.
  • BVN and Account Name Match: Instantly validate that the BVN provided by a user matches the name registered on their bank account. 
  • BVN Match: Secure your onboarding. Verify that the Bank Verification Number (BVN) provided matches the specific bank account number linked to it.
  • NIN Verification: Authenticate your customers against the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database.
